I’m Erik Raymond. I live in Omaha, Nebraska with my amazing wife and wonderful children. It is my great joy to spend most of my free time with them. I am also a pastor at Emmaus Bible Church. Here on the blog I like to write about the gospel and how intersects with my life. Much of what I write here flows out of this ministry. I am thankful that many of these articles have found a wider circulation in publications such as Tabletalk, The Gospel Coalition, Christianity Today, ChurchLeaders.com, Christianity.com, SermonCentral.com, and others.
I named this blog “Ordinary Pastor” because I was so impacted by a book written about a man who tirelessly worked to be faithful with the ordinary tasks of extraordinary ministry. Here is a quote from the book:
“Most pastors will not regularly preach to thousands, let alone tens of thousands. They will not write influential books, they will not supervise large staffs, and they will never see more than modest growth. They will plug away at their care for the aged, at their visitation, at their counseling, at their Bible studies, and preaching…Most of us—let us be frank—are ordinary pastors.” –D.A. Carson, Memoirs of an Ordinary Pastor (read my full review here)
Carson’s clear articulation of this simple priority of being ‘ordinary’ in the midst of the extraordinary calling of gospel ministry has continued to be instructive. Therefore, this blog is an overflow of a burden to be calibrated by the gospel in pursuit of being ‘ordinary.’ I try to write a lot of devotional articles (see here) as well as book reviews (see here).
